Today marks the anniversary of the January 6th attacks on our Capitol: the day that insurrectionists who stormed Congress had the explicit goal of overturning the results of a free and fair election in order to seize power for Donald Trump.

As one of the last people evacuated off the House floor that day, I feel responsible to preserve the crucial memory of what exactly happened: an attack on our democracy.

Back in 2021, my daughter, Molly, changed my ringtone. Since then, it's been a point of conversation on social media, in the halls of Congress, and even a POLITICO newsletter.

Despite it not being a song I'd choose, I never felt inclined to change it because it reminds me of my daughter and her sense of humor. However, today calls for a new battlecry.

It would be an understatement to say that 2024 has been quite an eventful year. And one thing is completely clear, we all need to rest up and be ready to continue to work for fairness, justice, and opportunity in 2025. I'm looking forward to enjoying the season and cherishing this time with friends, family, and loved ones.
