It’s a special kind of cruel to take food from hungry people
Right now, Republicans are working hard to make this country worse by cutting essential programs that help everyday Americans make ends meet.
The latest: Republicans want to gut food assistance to give billionaires more tax breaks.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), a program utilized by 47 million people experiencing food insecurity in the United States, is on the chopping block. For decades, SNAP has been our most effective anti-hunger tool. SNAP ensures that children, families, seniors, veterans, and Americans with disabilities get the food they need to live healthy lives. Any effort to shrink SNAP would devastate our nation's most vulnerable communities.
With Trump and his cronies attacking these very modest benefits at $2 per meal per person to fund more tax breaks for billionaires, it's absolutely critical that we fight back. 47 million people are relying on us.
That is why I have introduced new legislation to protect SNAP from backdoor benefit cuts alongside Shontel Brown (D-OH), Jahana Hayes (D-CT), and our 56 co-sponsors.
At a time when costs are skyrocketing, the economy is moving into a recession due to Trump tariffs, and Musk's chaotic DOGE layoffs are putting people out of work, programs like SNAP are more important than ever.
To us, this is a no-brainer: we must protect SNAP benefits and ensure future updates don't make our nation's affordability crisis and food insecurity problems any worse.
