Only Republicans would think you know voter disenfranchisement is a good idea

The Republican agenda items are right out of an authoritarian playbook: from putting the rich and powerful first, to undermining an independent judiciary, and fanning the flames of an affordability crisis. Today, I want to talk about their voter suppression efforts.

Consider the "SAVE Act," an effort by Trump-aligned Republicans to suppress voters. It's framed as an initiative to stop voter fraud, spurred by the baseless narrative that non-U.S. citizens pose a major threat to election security. As NPR puts it:

"Backers of the SAVE Act say requiring voters to show citizenship documents is necessary to protect election integrity — though they have yet to provide evidence that instances of illegal voting by noncitizens are anything but incredibly rare."

For example, if you changed your name after marriage, you will now need a certified copy of your birth certificate to vote. That name won't match (obviously), so you'll also need a raft of additional identifying information — some of which is costly to obtain.

Only Republicans would think voter disenfranchisement is somehow a good idea — they know they can't win on their policies (I mean, look around at the chaos they've created) — so they need to rely on cheap tricks like making it more difficult for American citizens to vote. To me, that's the real voter fraud.

Undermining the right to vote is just another paver on the road to authoritarianism.

While Republicans are putting us in the fast lane to a dictatorship, you can be damn sure that I'm not going to be silent. I will continue to raise hell in Congress. I hope you'll stand with me in the face of authoritarianism.

More soon,

Jim
