If at first you don't succeed

Over the weekend, the Trump administration took yet another extraordinary and unprecedented step to undermine our government.

Unelected billionaire and noted Nazi enthusiast Elon Musk was given unfettered access to the Treasury Department's payment systems, allowing him and his cronies at the so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" (not even a real department) to access sensitive information, like Social Security numbers, of millions of Americans. This access also allows him to unilaterally stop payments for programs that he deems "wasteful."

Given this administration's track record, we know what's first on the chopping block: crucial programs that help Americans get access to affordable healthcare, housing, food assistance, and much more.

News headline: Elon Musk's Team Now Has Access to Treasury's Payments System. The system could give the Trump administration another mechanism to attempt to unilaterally restrict disbursement of money approved for specific purposes by Congress, a push that has faced legal roadblocks.

This decision to grant Elon access comes right after a federal judge ruled that their previous attempt to freeze federal payments was illegal.

As the MAGA Republican's take on a famous saying goes: If at first you don't succeed in deliberately making life worse for the whole country, try and try again! This administration has been in power for less than 30 days, but they've made their absolute contempt for the American people clear through the actions they've prioritized.

We deserve better than a government that is actively putting its thumb on the scale to make life harder for Americans. We deserve better than a government that blatantly ignores the Constitution to raid public funds and enrich their allies. We deserve better than this, and that's what I'm fighting for every day in Congress.

Together in this fight,

Jim
