Remembering an American hero.
This month marks the passing of a giant in Congressman John Lewis, who went from an activist who marched on Selma to a lifelong member of the house who each day reminded us of the importance of "good trouble." He was the kind of man who inspired us all to be better, not just for ourselves but for our fellow citizens; working tirelessly to advance the cause of civil rights and liberties.
Our country is undoubtedly a better place because of his efforts.
It's no secret that there is a strong current of anti-democracy sentiment running through our politics. In recent years, we've seen calls to overturn free and fair elections at the local, state, and federal levels, and we've seen a truly vile amount of political violence, including an armed insurrection at our Capitol and the assassination attempt of a former president.
We cannot afford to let slip the progress we've made in fulfilling this country's promise to liberty and justice for all. Let us not only remember and honor the legacy of John Lewis, but renew our commitment to fighting the good fight and making "good trouble," for comprehensive voting rights and protections and the health of our democracy.
Congressman Lewis may not be here, but his legacy lives on through us. Let's make him proud.
Yours in the fight,
Jim
