It is and always has been about control
The Republican party's push to overturn Roe v. Wade was always about control. I know that; you know that; everyone knows that. What continues to shock us is the extreme steps they are willing to take to attack freedom and establish a society that denies women bodily autonomy. They won't stop until women are denied contraception and abortion is illegal in every state.
Just look at what is going on in Texas.
In the last two years, Texas has become one of the most restrictive states for abortion and reproductive care. In addition to criminal penalties for obtaining an abortion, Texas law encourages private citizens to surveil their fellow Americans and file lawsuits against anyone they suspect of committing the awful crime of helping someone obtain medical care.
What ever happened to the party of small government? Government overreach is hardly a strong enough term for this obvious infringement into Americans' lives. I need your help to take this power away from Texas and protect women across the country. Will you chip in to help us defend bodily autonomy?
What certain hyper-conservative lawyers have taken this to mean is that even people who leave the state to obtain an abortion should be punished under the law.
This confirms what all of us who aren't in the MAGA cult already know: it was never about "the sanctity of life," it is and always has been about control. Laws like these are just the beginning of the GOP's draconian desire to restrict American liberties. They're testing the waters to see what the courts and the American people will let them get away with.
Luckily, there's a simple way to put a stop to this nonsense once and for all: flip the House.
If Democrats take back the majority, you can be sure that restoring federal protections for abortion will be at the top of the docket. Republicans know this, so they'll be fighting tooth and nail, with all their corporate money and PACs, to try and cling to power. [We need to make sure we have the resources to take them on and elect a pro-choice majority. So, will you donate $3 to our campaign today?]
Yours in the fight,
Jim
