It's time to abolish ICE
In 2002, I voted against the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Would these agencies focus on apprehending those who intend to harm Americans? Or would they become political tools to divide communities?
It was a very uncertain time in our country. We were still reeling from the devastation of 9/11 – and looking for new ways to protect our country. But, used as a political tool, organizations like ICE and DHS can do just as much harm to our fundamental values as a nation.
Unfortunately, Donald Trump's proclivity towards authoritarianism and scoring political points has confirmed my deepest fears. Over the last few months, he's used ICE to go after innocent immigrant communities. To instill fear in our neighbors and friends. To divide people rather than bring them together. To tear apart families struggling to make a better life.
It's time to abolish ICE.
We need to start a fresh conversation. If there are elements that work, we can maintain and strengthen those aspects. Otherwise, we need to thoroughly re-evaluate and re-think immigration enforcement.
And we need to work with those most impacted by these policies, not drive them into hiding.
In 2002, I voted against the establishment of ICE and DHS. Now, I am urging my fellow legislators to join me in fixing this deeply politicized and broken system.
