This week's hearing and why Trump’s on our minds entering 2024

The signal was unmistakable. Having lost an election, Donald Trump wanted to hold onto power, the people's will be damned. This was his opportunity, both historic and utterly illegal.

We brought impeachment charges after such a blatant coup attempt because actions have consequences. No one should be above the law.

Unfortunately in this case, actions have consequences. We took rightful action against Donald Trump, and so his political party is out for revenge — at any cost.

Yesterday, the House Rules Committee met as part of an ongoing Republican effort to force an impeachment of President Joe Biden. It's an absolutely ridiculous attempt at revenge, as transparent as it is dangerous, thoroughly centered on conspiracies.

What happens next, however, should worry every American who believes in our democracy. Polls are showing Donald Trump competitive in the 2024 election, and he has hinted about further retribution for those who have stood against him.

We all have an important part to play: ensuring that Donald Trump's allies in the House aren't in charge in 2024.

Since January 6, we've seen persistent attacks not only on our democracy, but on the great policy gains we've made over the last generations. I'm talking about the right to a safe and legal abortion after Roe v. Wade — yes — but so much more if Team Trump has their way.

I was proud to play my part in Donald Trump's impeachment hearings, because it was the right thing to do for our democracy. It's the same about the 2024 election: I am eager for us to play our part in what must be a strong election for freedom and progressive policy ideas, and to put ridiculous, revenge-first efforts like these to bed.

Please consider chipping in just $3 and join this major effort as we get set to enter 2024 and one of the most consequential elections to-date.
